Though it's billed as a musical, it's more of a musical revue, with six musicians/singers performing more than two dozen terrific blues songs from Ma Rainey to Bonnie Raitt.
The revue has a lot going for it: great music, the brilliant Tammy Hall on piano (and serving as music director), and a tight, all-woman cast.
Unfortunately, the book (more of a narrated timeline of women in the blues) lacks any real dramatic punch, which undercuts the laudable intention of producer/performer Pamela Rose to shine a light on women that the world of music has often neglected or failed to give their due.
