Even fully funded graduate programs can lead to tons of debt.
I did a PhD that was "fully funded", but the first year (the MA) was not. So that was a ton of money. And then on top of that, each year in the PhD you were able to take out a few thousand in loans, which was all but necessary since NYC rents are high, and the terms of the program meant that you were not allowed to have outside employment while you received your funding.

So I now have more out in loans than I did after undergrad.

I also have a fairly useless PhD. I can adjunct - yay! But I don't even see the part time/seasonal contracts that Singapore/Fling talks about. It's pretty much all a course here, a course there...Each semester it's a crapshoot where I will get classes. All for 3-5K per class.

So if anyone asks me, I would tell them to stay far, far away from a PhD in the humanities. Even IF it is fully funded. MFA might be a tad better, if only because it's a shorter length of time and its more legible to practical theaters, so you have employment options outside academia.
