| This is so sad, it is news that I didn't want to see. I have beautiful memories of Barbara Cook. I have known this lady forever, she was special, probably around the time of SHE LOVES ME. I would see her many places and shows and would visit in her room all the time even when no one else was allowed backstage. She would invite me to events and shows. She had just come off the road with a show THE GERSHWIN YEARS. She was having a hard time with her life and had gained tons of weight. She asked me to call her. She said she wanted to try and do cabaret but didn't know what to do. We had tons of calls back and forth until I finally said "Try it, there is nothing to loose, if you fail, okay but you may not." After several calls on that matter, she said, I will listen to you and try it. She got booked in a little club on West 46th Street BROTHERS AND SISTERS, for a week or so in the summer. She was such a success that she was extended and extended for weeks. She did a concert at Town Hall and performed all over the place, she did CARNEGIE HALL. After many clubs in New York she had a gig at RENO SWEEENY,S. It was thrilling as she was singing "Marianne" from the GRAND TOUR. She invited me to come and of course forgot to sing the song. She promised she would do it for me the next time. Soon after, she returned to CARNEGIE HALL again and did it for me. Something I am very grateful for is when she sung "A Ship In a Bottle", written by Amanda McBroom, she said if this lady is performing anywhere, run, don't walk and see her. Well I did and we have become the best of friends. I was hired to do work for her, I would get her mail and water her plants whenever she had to go out of town. Each plant had a different way to take care of it. She was an Orchid lover and those took special care. When she had her apartment renovated, I had to help pack up stuff to go into storage and she had me take the orchids to my apartment, as we were worried about the Orchids and dust. The rest of the plants were fine. There is an orchid named for her. she had a cat for a short while and I took care of that. The last time I saw her perform was at the Apel Room in the Time Warner Building about two years ago. When she retired not too long ago, I figured it really would not be the last time we would see her. 89 is beautiful, she died practically with her boots on. How weird, I was just talking about her and her master class last night. RIP in peace and my heart is with her son Adam. and I will miss you. Maryann |
