My very first Broadway show was THE MUSIC MAN. I was seven years old and had no idea what a huge part the musical theatre would play in my life. I've written this before but towards the end of the show during the "Till There Was You" number on the bridge I started sniffling. My mother asked me what was wrong and I replied, "I think the show is ending." Yep, I was hooked that afternoon and fell in love with Barbara Cook.
As a teenager I saw Cook, Eileen Rodgers and IIRC Jack Cassidy and Bill Hayes (please correct me if I'm mistaken since I've always wondered who the two male performers were that evening if anyone knows) at A GERSHWIN EVENING at Lincoln Center. I was also fortunate to see her many times as an adult at the Studio One in West Hollywood where she seemed totally relaxed and happy to be in the presence of adoring audiences. For me no one sang better live than Barbara Cook. She was a consummate performer with the voice of an angel. She will be truly missed.
