Thanks for those memories. I learned of her when a college boyfriend (circa 1975) played the Carnegie Hall album for me. Saw her for the first time in 1977 at the Roxy in Los Angeles. Since then I've seen her no less than 15 times and probably more--Lincoln Center, Pasadena, the Carlyle (3 times), the Annenberg, Hollywood Bowl, literally in someone's backyard for a Hollywood fundraiser, and so on. Never disappointed no matter how big or how small the venue. I spoke to her twice, the last time at the Annenberg after a show that was a bit rocky for her, one which left us wondering if she was nearing the end of her public performances (which indeed was true). But at the after-party, she spoke eloquently and deliberately to the well-heeled Beverly Hills audience on how important it was to open up their checkbooks and support the arts. She was everything everyone says about her, and I share in the collective grief being expressed on this board. During the late '80's, she talked in between songs about being a child in Atlanta and worshiping Jeannette MacDonald and how she loved it when everyone would turn and listen to MacDonald as she stood on her balcony and sang (a reference to "The Merry Widow"). Then she talked about "The Music Man" and Robert Preston and so on; about five or six songs later, she came back to the original notion of MacDonald, and made her point--she thanked us all in the audience for standing under her "balcony" and listening to her sing. This, to me, is what made her special, above and beyond her extraordinary performances. She appreciated her audiences and made us feel special for taking time out of our lives to spend it with her. Lord knows, we were the lucky ones.
