Barbara Cook was below the title of ''Candide,'' so she would've eligible for Featured Actress, not Leading.
(Similarly, Tom Bosley of ''Fiorello!'' and Tammy Grimes of ''Unsinkable Molly Brown'' were below the title, and up for Featured.)
Cook's co-star, Irra Petina, who played the Old Lady, got a Tony nomination for Featured in ''Candide,'' but not Cook.
Maybe you were around in 1956 and 1964 and saw all of those performances, and can compare and contrast. I wasn't.
But even if you were, who deserves a Tony nomination, and who doesn't, is always gonna be a subjective call.
I can only judge by the cast recordings, and to me, it's crazy that Cook didn't get a Tony nom for Cunegonde or Amalia. |
