| The presentation to Landmarks was on the website around the time of the hearing. That was late 2015, and only this year's look to be there now. Wait, NY YIMBY posted about it, including all the images. Link below. Is the current lobby even original? The construction photos in the presentation seem to show the avenue frontage completely cleared. [ETA: the photo on IBDB's Palace page looks nothing like the current lobby.] The lobby isn't landmarked, so although the raised theatre will have a much larger lobby, I don't think they mean to move the existing hallway from Broadway along with the theatre. The foundation of the whole thing is that the theatre itself—inside the lobby doors, which aren't original—is a box that's completely separate from the hotel building. That's what makes this possible. The 7th Avenue frontage would all be retail. The hotel entrance would move around the corner onto 47th, and the theatre would get a new marquee nearly the whole length of the house-left side. And it may be a palace, but right now it has so much crap over it that you can hardly tell there's a theatre there until you're at the doors. The plan includes a lot of house restoration, too, returning to original (or at least original-inspired) details and fixtures, replacing some 40s/50s additions and changes. |
