Bill Murray, the original star of ''Groundhog Day,'' went to see the Broadway musical of ''Groundhog Day'' tonight.

Sopan Deb of the N.Y. Times tagged along, and tweeted about it as it happened (see link below). Murray was joined by his brother, Brian-Doyle, and Danny Rubin, who co-wrote the original movie and got a Tony nomination for the book. According to Deb, Murray fist-pumped during Phil Connors' first meeting with Ned Ryerson, and Murray was in tears during the bows. He then went backstage and gave an ''amazing speech'' to the cast.

Murray told them: ''It's beautiful what you're doing.'' In an interview with Deb, she says Murray got emotional and said that Harold Ramis, who directed the 1993 movie and co-wrote it, would've been flabbergasted by the show. Murray was mobbed by fans and graciously took lots of selfies.

Deb is writing up the full story, and will have more details about Murray's backstage visit.

I'm so happy that Bill Murray finally made it to ''Groundhog Day.'' Wish he could've gone months ago, especially during awards season. Or introduced the show on the Tonys. Anyway, the show sure could use this shot of P.R. ... I love ''Groundhog Day,'' and wish it were doing boffo box office. It was one of my favorite shows of the season; the book and the direction are so clever, and I still wish Andy Karl had won his Tony.
