| Exactly. That's not to say that Onadowan isn't responsible for his actions in recent weeks. Did he initially agree to Patinkin's stint to help keep the show afloat, and then reverse himself after the racism controversy popped up online? Onadowan could've helped quell that, and looked like the magnanimous hero by saying that Patinkin's a terrific star, and that Onadowan loved the show enough to do anything to help it run longer. But it's so crazy to blame ''Comet's'' closing solely on him, and to scapegoat him and the online critics/ actors of color who cried racism. As ryhog and many others have pointed out, the seeds of this disaster were planted MONTHS ago. Again, why did they announce Onadowan back in February - 4 months before Groban was leaving? Was Onadowan really the biggest name they could land? Which stars turned them down? Were they really naïve or foolish enough to think Onadowan would sell enough tickets to replace Groban (a nearly impossible expectation) or that they wouldn't need a star after Groban's exit? The ineptitude has been staggering. Had we also forgotten about the wrangling over giving Ars Nova credit for its role in creating ''Great Comet''? After the closing, no doubt there's a book the size of ''War and Peace'' to be written about what really happened ... |
