| In some sense I agree, which is part of what makes it not at the level of CoC, as I established my opinion of it to be. The issue of the lyric text already having been written and placed over music is interesting because in some ways the fact that to me, in so many more places that not, it works so beautifully makes it seem all the bigger challenge to have overcome and I think Malloy did overcome it. And I would at the very least point to "No One Else" and the whole last scene between Natasha and Pierre and then the finale as an example of the the music and lyrics combining to enhance the story telling -- off the top of my head, I know I think there are more examples in the score for sure. And I don't think the "slightness" of the story hinders the musical at all, if anything it may be the opposite for me. I think among many wonderful things it is an exploration of the madness, passion, discovery, tragedy and joy of being young and stupid and then life breaking you so you can be smarter (mentally and emotionally). And I don't need a big story for that, even though I do think this story is big in its way. It's interesting to use Caroline or Change as an example of the opposite because for a 2.5 hour musical it has one of the slightest stories in musical theater... and it is because the show is mostly about this relationship between a boy and the maid his parents employee and the moments that make up their experience together, how they affect each other, and the main conflict is about leaving too much money in his laundry... in CorC the world basically blows up because of a small yet enormous conflict of interests of two incredibly different people. It is one of the smallest stories about huge things, which is one of the reasons it is so genius to me. So while Great Comet doesn't achieve the same kind of layers and depths of brilliance as Caroline, I do think it achieves more than many musicals people consider brilliant, like Dear Evan Hansen, which beat it for Best Score and Musical. Caroline or Change lost both score and book to Avenue Q, as well as Best Musical. I love Avenue Q, and in another year it might have gotten my vote (definitely over Wicked), but I am still shocked that Caroline didn't at least get best score. Shocked and APPALLED! :) |
