| I also saw the show last night and had quite an enjoyable evening. The performers all had wonderful opportunities to score and they did. I thought there were a few missteps in presentation and performance, though. I read a few people saying they thought the production looked cheap and I did not feel that way. I thought the set design worked for each segment very well. The costumes were much more than I had anticipated. My big problem is with the narration - and the glasses on the head. If you didn't know that Hal Prince liked to wear his glasses in that position, you would have no idea why everyone had them. There was no picture associating them to him and no identifying narration. Also, many of the performers wore them way back on their head, which is not Hal Prince's MO. The narration tells us almost nothing. It seems that only once or twice does it have anything to do with what we are going to see. Why did he choose these shows? What sparked his interest? What did he think of the final product? Did he achieve what he set out to do with each show? What made them special to him? Instead, we got general interest quotes that were just, well, general. He's an incredible producer/director so could we actually get some specifics? As I stated, I enjoyed the evening but nothing really stayed with me as I traveled home. Still, it was nice to hear so many wonderful songs in one night. |
