Trying to grapple with why this show moved me.

"...a woman in the audience said she had seen the show 27 times."

I think it touches people in unexpected ways. I'm no vet, have not lost an immediate family member (though an uncle, prior to my birth), and have no 1st tier access to the show's issues. Yet it grabbed me in the theater in mysterious ways*. Or maybe not so mysterious. It's a show that manages to entertain with some old school tropes and new psychological insights. I know it's imperfections, yet still found myself leaning into "Bandstand's" emotions more than any other show this season, even those I much admired.

*One thing I've mulled, and this is very subjective, others may not agree at all: I appreciate the way the show portrays something basic, being an adult male. So much of our entertainment these days focuses on man-children, 40-year-old adolescents working through unresolved childhood angst, delayed maturity. I'm not suggesting any of those stories are wrong, many are brilliant, merely that I tire of those portrayals, even when they are expertly accomplished. The men in "Bandstand" are deeply wounded, flawed (and I realize they are highly shorthanded -- a criticism of the book I certainly understand.) Yet they are ... how can I say it ... grown-ups. Maybe that's refreshing, independent of their veterans' issues. I appreciated a leading man who owns his s--t. It's not his war heroism that the show celebrates: it's his adulthood. During "Right This Way," I realized I've missed that in our stories.
