I agree--it was the first song I thought of when I heard that she had passed away. Heartbreaking.
We saw her in concert about five years ago at the Segerstrom Center in Orange County, Calif., and she did a medley of "Bye, Bye, Blackbird" and "House of the Rising Sun" that was stunning. At that concert she also sang "Makin' Whoopee" with a third (and very funny) verse that I had never heard before. And we saw her in Stephen Sondheim's 75th birthday concert at the Hollywood Bowl when she and Josh Groban sang "Move On." It was like watching her pass the baton to another generation.
At the end of the Segerstrom Center concert, although she had been seated for the entire concert, she walked to the lip of the stage, flung open her arms, and declared, "And I'm eighty-effin'-five years old!"
Except she didn't say "effin."
The audience went wild.
So lucky to have seen her perform live as well as to have so many indelible performances preserved on audio and video. |
