| ... this could well be true, but what matters? The show, if it is like Alladin and Lion King, will likely spin $1 million a week in net income, meaning it would recoup in 9 months. But what matters this to Disney. Their corporate profits in 2016, a down year, were $2.48 billion. A $30 million musical is small beer to the Mouse, which self funds its own shows. They are entertainment and marketing juggernauts. The Disney Brand guarantees them a level of audience for a while, even for miscues like TARZAN and LITTLE MERMAID. Many millions were lost during all the many years that Disney tried to find a stage worthy musical version of HUNCHBACK OF NOTRE DAME. It started 18 years ago with a production in Berlin. Good enough, but not for Broadway. The new version that lumbered onto the Paper Mill stage last season was pretty much D.O.A. But Disney will ring some $ out of it regardless but .... they still had corporate profits of $2.48 billion despite Hunchback's costs. So some day Disney will do an $100 million musical on Broadway. Why not? If they want to, they will. The Mouse does not have to venture into Little Old Lady Land like Max Bialystock to get the 'checkies'. Anytime they want to produce a show on Broadway Tom Schumacher takes some millions out of the DT bank account and away they go. And theatre owners line up like waiters at Harmonia Gardens, to give the Mouse anything he wants. Show Business used to be the quaint phrase for the ramshackle world of Broadway. Now it IS Show Business, with corporate entities getting stronger and stronger, and pushing independent producers further and further to the sidelines. This is not going to change. We just all have to find our place within this new model. |
