For me, 'Groundhog' scores, and 'Matilda' doesn't

Taste is so subjective. I wasn't a fan of ''Matilda'' and could barely make out the lyrics in the theater. The only tune I liked was ''When I Grow Up.''

On the other hand, ''Groundhog Day'' is one of the few CDs of a new musical I've bought this season, and I really enjoy Minchin's music and wit.

Many of Pasek and Paul's songs in ''A Christmas Story'' were delightful, but I have no interest in hearing anything from ''Dear Evan Hansen'' again.

''Matilda'' did much better at the box office than ''Groundhog'' ever did, but I'll take ''Groundhog'' any day, and can't wait to see it once more.

As for ''pitiful grosses,'' what a show brings in, isn't automatically a reflection of its quality (which also is subjective). Sometimes, good shows don't find their audience, and sometimes, bad ones do. For instance, ''Cats'' ran much, much longer than certain Sondheim shows I love. That's showbiz.
