Off-Broadway shows to look forward to this fall?
Posted by: Ann 04:09 pm EDT 08/11/17

I have a short list for plays starting in the next months or so ...

Charm at MCC, On the Shore of the Wide World at the Atlantic, Mary Jane at NYTW, CSC As You Like It ...

I'm also still hoping someone here will post a report on the Mint's The Suitcase Under The Bed plays, which started a few weeks ago

I saw the Hudson Valley Shakespeare Festival's production of Pride and Prejudice this summer up in Cold Spring and really enjoyed it. It's coming to the Cherry Lane Theatre in November. Mark Bedard and John Tufts were especially good.

Ann, we saw The Suitcase Under the Bed a few weeks ago and overall enjoyed this evening of one acts. We have not been big fans of the Teresa Deevy plays the Mint has done before (and personally, I'm not wild about evenings of short plays in general), so our expectations were not high. The final play of the evening, The King of Spain's Daughter, is the only one to have been previously produced. It is the darkest and grittiest of the evening and is reminiscent of a J.M. Synge play. The others are a bit more sentimental (and not in a sappy way) in their treatment of marriage and family relations. They reminded me somewhat of Horton Foote one acts.

I found the inserted "entr'actes" between the first and second and third and fourth plays confusing. I thought they were part of the texts (rather than serving as palate cleansers), and I couldn't figure out what they had to do with the characters and plots!

Overall, it's a pleasant night at the theatre, and since I am a huge supporter of the work the Mint does in any case, I'd certainly recommend it.

Entr'acte poems in "Suitcase"

The entr'acte poems contain lines that Deevy used in both of the plays that immediately follow. The poems are printed in an insert to the playbill. I thought that the two readings were beautifully done.

Thank you for that information. I saw the play early in preview, and there wasn't an insert. (Or at least mine didn't include one--I just checked my program to be sure.) That would have been helpful to know.

Great lists so far!
I would add KPOP (ARS NOVA), Torch Song (Second Stage), For Peter Pan on Her Seventieth Birthday (Playwrights Horizons), The Wolves (Lincoln Center Theatre) and Jesus Hopped the 'A' Train (Signature Theatre)

Thanks, both

I think I liked the Deevy plays more than you, but I did wonder about an evening of (they must be very) short plays.

But I love the Mint, too, and glad they extended this just a tiny bit (if only Bandstand could last one more week ...) so I could see it (I selfishly say).

These short plays were apparently found in a suitcase under Teresa Deevy's bed after she died and, thus, the title of the show.

I very much enjoyed each play, and found them full of charm and romance and good humor. The only problem I had was that each one of them seemed to be the opening scene for a full length play, with not very much resolved by curtain.

And with each one-acter I wanted to see MORE, and felt I had just gotten to know and like the characters when each of these little plays ended.

Still, I love the Mint Theatre and what they do with forgotten plays/playwrights, and I had a very fine time last Sunday afternoon.

PS -- Yes, I can see the Horton Foote comparison to these works. Which is probably why I enjoyed them so much.
