Ann, we saw The Suitcase Under the Bed a few weeks ago and overall enjoyed this evening of one acts. We have not been big fans of the Teresa Deevy plays the Mint has done before (and personally, I'm not wild about evenings of short plays in general), so our expectations were not high. The final play of the evening, The King of Spain's Daughter, is the only one to have been previously produced. It is the darkest and grittiest of the evening and is reminiscent of a J.M. Synge play. The others are a bit more sentimental (and not in a sappy way) in their treatment of marriage and family relations. They reminded me somewhat of Horton Foote one acts.
I found the inserted "entr'actes" between the first and second and third and fourth plays confusing. I thought they were part of the texts (rather than serving as palate cleansers), and I couldn't figure out what they had to do with the characters and plots!
Overall, it's a pleasant night at the theatre, and since I am a huge supporter of the work the Mint does in any case, I'd certainly recommend it. |
