I like all of Julie Harris' songs -- she was such a great actress and has quite a distinctive singing voice. I agree with you that Marshall's big vocals are also enjoyable. Reilly's material is disappointing, but I do like his unique delivery and style. What I intensely dislike are the numbers that really have nothing to do with the actual story like "Local 403", "The Gaiety", and "Haute Couture" -- they seem like filler. I wish Van Heusen and Cahn had done a better job of musicalizing the story -- they were more successful with Walking Happy.
I bought the LP when I was a teenager (mostly because of Harris) and I have the CD. I feel a little guilty that I listen to it as often that I do -- I just wish it would give me more pleasure than it does. Nevertheless, I'm glad that you enjoy it more than I do. |
