HOWARD CRABTREE'S WHEN PIGS FLY, created by Howard Crabtree and Mark Waldrop, with music by the late Dick Gallagher, stars a character named Howard (Jordan Ahnquist), not unlike Mr. Crabtree. In a hastily booked theatre under renovation, Howard struggles to put on a lavish musical revue over numerous obstacles, including the near-mutiny of his cast, and the nagging memory of his high school guidance counselor, who told him he'd succeed "when pigs fly." Just when it seems all is lost, Howard realizes the problem isn't that he's gone too far -- it's that he hasn't gone far enough. The show goes on, and all of Howard's fabulously sequined dreams come true.

A former dancer, Howard Crabtree began creating outlandish and wildly imaginative costumes for friends while working in the wardrobe department at Broadway's original production of La Cage aux Folles. It was there that he met cast member Mark Waldrop, his future collaborator and director for several Off-Broadway musicals showcasing Crabtree's designs. The New York Times described one production as the show Florenz Ziegfeld would have produced "had he been gay and grown up in the age of the Ridiculous Theatrical Company, Charles Busch and RuPaul."

Mr. Crabtree completed his designs and died from AIDS complications several weeks before the opening of the original WHEN PIGS FLY in 1996. The show went on to delight critics and audiences for two years and 840 performances at the Douglas Fairbanks Theatre, a few steps away from where Stage 42 now stands. WHEN PIGS FLY won the Drama Desk Award (Outstanding Revue), the Outer Critics Circle Award (Outstanding Off-Broadway Musical, Outstanding Costume Design), and a special citation for Howard Crabtree and the creative team from the OBIE Awards.

Crabtree idolized designer Bob Mackie, who combined visual humor with glamour so brilliantly on "The Carol Burnett Show." So it's fitting that Mr. Mackie (who was an enthusiastic fan of Howard's work in the original production) is designing this revival.

Additional design and production team includes Adam Koch (scenic design), Julie Duro (lighting design), Ian Werhle (sound design), Joe McFate (associate costume design) Ed Goldschneider (music director) Binder Casting Jay Binder/Jack Bowdan/Justin Bohon (casting), Perry Street Theatricals (general management), and Luke Anderson (production stage manager).

HOWARD CRABTREE'S WHEN PIGS FLY will begin performances October 6 at Stage 42 (422 West 42nd Street) for an open run. Performances are Mondays at 7:30pm, Wednesdays at 7:30pm, Thursdays at 8pm, Fridays at 8pm, Saturdays at 3pm and 8pm, and Sundays at 3pm and 7:30pm. Tickets are $69 - $109; premium seating $129 - $139; preview premium ticket at $250 will be available via Telecharge.com or (212) 239-6200.

I wonder if they're all openly gay

The original cast was and there is a lyric that says "just to be in it, you gotta be out!" You can't exactly say someone can't audition if they're straight but I imagine they wanted a gay cast and I wonder how they determined that.

The best-known song from ''When Pigs Fly'' is ''Laughing Matters'' with lyrics by Mark Waldrop and music by Dick Gallagher. The inimitable Jay Rogers sang it originally, and Bette Midler would record this comic and touching tune for her ''Bathhouse Betty'' album. In 2005, Dick passed away at only age 49 of pneumonia and kidney failure, but he left behind a legacy of other Off-Broadway shows, too: ''Whoop-Dee-Doo,'' ''Have I Got a Girl for You ... The Frankenstein Musical'' (''a big old turkey,'' he called it), and ''Whatnot,'' which won the 1990 Richard Rodgers Award.

But I knew Dick best through his wonderful work as a multi-MAC Award-winning musical director/arranger. He played for Patti LuPone, Karen Akers, Lina Koutrakos, Karen Mason, Helen Baldassare, Phillip Officer, David Staller and many more. He performed at Carnegie Hall and Town Hall, and all the top cabarets at the time: the Algonquin, the Russian Tea Room, Rainbow & Stars, Eighty Eight's, etc. And he made his solo singing debut in ''Monday in the Dark With George,'' a delightful revue of George Winters' witty songs. What a sweet and gentle and terrifically talented guy.

Below is a link to Michael Portantiere's TheaterMania obit of Dick, which includes a beautiful tribute from Patti LuPone.

Anyone know what Jay Rogers is up to nowadays?

I knew him back in the day, and used to see him on the regular at Don't Tell Mama, but I haven't dropped in there in eons. Is he still performing?

He was in the 54 Below When Pigs Fly reunion concert. I think he's still doing some background cabaret work, and he was in a Once Upon a Mattress awhile ago.

I remember seeing a news article on him in his day job - still trying to dig it up.

Jay also just did a reading of ''OMG ... BROADWAY!'' last week at the York Theatre Company.

Speaking of ''When Pigs Fly!'' alumni, John Tracey Egan is currently getting raves as Albin/Zaza in S.F. Playhouse's ''La Cage aux Folles.''

If its a hit, and I certainly wish you a HUGE HIT, will Whoop Dee Doo come next, possibly running it repertoire? That's the only possible outcome after this revival rakes in the audiences.

For those not in the know, Whoop Dee Doo was Crabtree's first vanity review (and I don't use the term to demean him or the shows in any way, I ADORE them both), not as strong as When Pigs Fly, but potentially wildly entertaining as well.

Hopefully, this very funny show will remove the "curse" from STAGE 42, (formerly THE LITTLE SHUBERT), as it is an excellent Off Broadway theater.

I hope so to. The stars would have to align perfectly in every respect for this (or any) show to have a chance in that venue. The cast is not awe-inspiring, and I don't think people buy tickets to see costumes, but we shall see. I love the show.

I very much like the idea of it being on 42nd Street (does the theater have a big marquee?), though I wonder how much walk-in business they will get.

It will be fun to see it with a new cast.

I assume they'll be updating the torch songs? Maybe "Mitch," "Reince," and of course "trump"? Certainly a wealth of others to choose from as well...;-)

Trust you, Sir to jump on that one. You did music direct one or both of Spiro's productions many years ago? I saw both incarnations. I remember bringing all of my friends when Lyric revived it 5 years out.

Actually, no - I didn't MD either production (I think Steve Bergman did it both times), but I did see both, and had a marvelous time! And the inimitable and wonderful Peter Carey got to sing the torch song numbers.

Its a revival not a resuscitation.

And my understanding is that Bob was a big fan of the original show, and there will be homages to Howard's work included.

I wonder if William Ivey Long was approached?

In reply to: re: Costumes by Bob Mackie - Zelgo 03:42 pm EDT 08/14/17

When Pigs Fly uses a lot of 'transforming' costumes that would fit right in the Ivey-Long portfolio with Cinderella, The Producers (Springtime), La Cage, and Irma Vep.

I'm sure Bob Mackie will do just fine.

This IS fantastic news.
