Barbara Cook memory

I wasn't sure I'd share this, but after listening to a tribute to Ms. Cook on Sirius radio this evening on my way home, here goes: Picture it: Fall, 1979. A very poor 23-year-old out on a date with a girl (yup!) from college, I could barely afford the beer I bought at the bar at Reno Sweeney. I knew Ms. Cook was appearing there, but also knew the show was in a room off the bar, and couldn't afford the cover and minimum. There was no door to the other room, just an archway with a velvet rope separating the bar from the performance space.

Imagine my/our surprise and delight, when the management allowed anyone who wanted to watch the show to stand in that archway and enjoy the entire show! What a treat! We all made room for each other, with the shorter folks standing closest to the rope.

Many moons later, I was further fortunate to see Ms. Cook in Follies in Concert, at the Carlyle (That Champion Season was just about the best musical I'd seen in 20 years), and then her two ongoing engagements at the Vivian Beaumont, Mostly Sondheim and Barbara Cook's Broadway. Both of those shows were magnificent.

As a former singer, her recordings and performances were an incredible education. As a teacher, as well as a student, I'm all the more grateful.

All the best,

Fred

I'm not sure what you mean when you say you saw her ...

"... at the Carlyle (That Champion Season was just about the best musical I'd seen in 20 years), ..."

Huh?

Sure. The Champion Season was the name of her show. It was dedicated to the work(s) of Gower Champion, and included songs from all the shows he directed. Fortunately, it was recorded by DRG, and is a listening treasure. Email me for more details. Fred

I can't believe I'm so completely unaware of such a show (cabaret, concert or otherwise) and/or such a recording!

Sounds wonderful!!

And I was certain you weren't referring to the play. ;)

You keep calling it a show. When I saw it in P-Town in 1999, it was the name of her Gower Chanpion concert.

Wasn't it a cabaret show?

Yes, it was both a concert program and a cabaret show depending on the venue.

Did Cook and Champion ever work together? I bet she'd have been a smashing Dolly Levi or Dorothy Brock, even if the latter would have not really been the vocal showcase she deserved.

It was where I first saw her live.
Fred, we could have both been there that night!
We were at a table to her right and overheard her tell Wall Harper the encore would be "Vanilla Ice Cream".

Was the engagement only one night?

My parents saw her there. I remember my mother saw a tiny ad or notice, probably the Times, and they were thrilled that one of their favorite Broadway stars from their young married days was appearing. After that show, they followed her constantly, and I was lucky enough to tag along for many evenings at swell clubs. I'll never forget one night at Michaels Pub. My dad was pretty recognizable - he covered every role Stubby Kaye ever played, if that gives you a visual - so Barbara knew him by sight. The spot followed her as she sidled over to our table, where she referenced his frequent attendance by flirtily asking him "So, are we dating?" He got a kiss, and a memory for life, and I couldn't have loved her more.

If only I could vividly recall hearing Barbara Cook at Reno Sweeney. All I remember is the sighing and the attention and the applause. She had us all in her hands.

Two thoughts … one, mid-'60s an actor friend -- you all know him -- was between jobs and sold neckties at Bloomingdale's one Christmas. One day Barbara Cook was a customer. Three ties, three boxes, the sale completed, finally Mike gushed how wonderful Barbara Cook was, how he had all her shows, so much loved "She Loves Me." "Oh, you all always say that." She smiled lovingly and left. Two, she came to press agent Henry Luhrman's '89 memorial at Michael's Pub. Love and respect shown. She has had my heart ever since. R.I.P.
