| I am a member of several great chat boards and although a lot of people on the other sites have fun names, we all know who each other are. Why are so many people anonymous here? Just curious. Cheers Rob |

| QUOTE: ...we all know who each other are. No, we don't all know who each other are. I don't know who you are. And you don't know who I am. (New Yorker Cartoon: On the internet, nobody knows you're a dog.) But your comment exposes a troubling part of ATC. It is more cliquish than a cheerleader's middle school lunch table. The snarky comments to shut down a thread, the games of "I know more theatre than you" and the general feeling of "you're not really welcome here" make this a very brutal place to be. Meanwhile, you ask why people are anonymous? Why don't you tell us why you chose to be anonymous? Sure, some of your buds may know who you are. But you hide behind a "fun" name with sexual innuendo. Why? While my user name may look anonymous, it's actually identifies me more than my family and given names would. (Go do a search.) So in some way "Vectorbabe" is my stage name. And anyone can easily find me. But your anonymous name here truly hides your identity. So I wouldn't ask why some people are anonymous until you have opened your kimono. |

| Well, to be fair, from the moment he burst onto the ATC scene, Rob has always linked to his website, which is all about him. So he's been very open about whooooooo he is. |

| Linking to his website is a great way to come out from behind the curtain. Where is his linked? I can't find it. And "Naughty_Rob" doesn't show on a Google search. |

| When Rob first "broke onto the scene", he heavily hyped (and I do believe linked to) his site Naughty Gossip. Perhaps in response to the community's request that he not use the site for self-promotion, he has stopped linking or mentioning the site. I went to it once, and it features videos of Rob, who is a middle-aged British man with a somewhat hyperactive style of delivery, not unlike his posts. |

| It's a fair question. When I joined, it seemed a different time. Choosing screen names and avatars was part of the experience. Part of the sport of it, maybe. Most used an alias on Huffington Post then, too, until they changed their policy and linked commenting to social media. If I were to join now, I might be inclined to use a version of my name. I use my name and identity on Twitter, FB, everywhere but theater boards. On the other hand, I've had close friends associated with a certain percentage of the shows discussed here. I'd be less likely to weigh in as I have - if at all. In the case of two productions, off the top of my head, I've even avoided posting even with my fake name. As noted, a lot of people here are in the business, peripherally, or in an attendant part of the industry. I'm more willing to speak boldly and frankly about -- and own -- all of my political beliefs than about the theater. I'll leave that there. |

| On my end, there are a few reasons why I choose to remain anonymous on this site (and why I am careful about how much of myself to reveal here): 1) I learned in the late 90s some of the problems that arise when you use your real name in a public space on the internet. 2) Being anonymous allows me to speak honestly about things that I see in the theater in a way that don't in public. Sure, when I'm with my friends or my colleagues and we're dishing about what we've seen, I say most of the same things that I say here, but those are private conversations. One of the reasons that I never pursued criticism as a career is that once you begin criticizing artists, it's difficult to work in a creative capacity in the theater. I would be much more guarded on this site if I was going by my own name. 3) Feeding into that, this site is also a place where I don't have to worry about presenting myself professionally. I still have to be careful about the words I use, as I should, but I' I'm also allowed to be looser and to make mistakes here that I can't make in the real world. 4) This site doesn't always have the best reputation in the business. A couple years back, I told a colleague that I frequented this site. He gave me a withering look, said, "oh, you're one of those people", and our relationship never recovered. To be fair, it wasn't a great relationship to begin with, so I don't blame ATC for my lack of advancement at that particular company, but it did teach me to stay quiet about my appreciation for this board. 5) I like being anonymous because it means that the only context I have here are the words that I use. Over the years, that has taught me a lot about my communication skills, which has actually made me a better writer and participant in the world at large. It's more work to be anonymous and contextless, but I find it more valuable as well. I've answered your questions, so I'm going to ask one of my own: what do you gain from using this site as a source of self-promotion? |

| The fact that you wrote "list" makes me wonder if you're mixing up listservs with chat boards. There tends to be less anonymity with listservs because people's messages are sent directly from their email accounts. On most every chat board I've ever been on — whether for theater, music, movies, politics or anything else — people are usually somewhat anonymous in that their screen names are not their full real-life names. As noted by others already, this board is less anonymous than many others. Many long-time members of this site know my full name, partly because I used to review books for this site (which I stopped doing mostly because I got tired of saying the same things over and over again as so many of the books I reviewed had more or less the same problems). Many of us know each other off the board (and we got to know each other originally through this board). |

| I'm anonymous (or, at least, only identified by my user name) because when I registered I was asked for my first name, my last name, and a username, and being a good boy I entered them all and used the username that I ordinarily use (my first name plus my initials), and it turns out that only the username is displayed. If there were a great hankering from anyone to know who I really am, I'd happily oblige, but I've assumed no one cares. I'm not remotely famous, and even in my home town would only be known to a select few who have seen my shows and happen to remember my name. |

| When I joined this site all those many years ago, I was still in high school, and it was still a time when parents and teachers cautioned us to never use our real names on the internet. (Seems quaint when I look back on it now.) Were I joining fresh today, I'd have no qualms using my actual name if I wanted to. | |

| ^ This, although I used to tag posts on here with my initials way back when (I took a hiatus from this board and theater for about 12 years and couldn't recover the old username so there are not many who "know" me from then), I'm not in the habit of doing that now, but the premise was the same not to be immediately identifiable online. Now that social media profiles are everywhere and many people carry a computer in their pocket, it's a different approach. -BP For old times sake |

| Rob may be the only (non-lurking) person on here that has his own wiki profile (linked) Obvious his agenda is self-promotion as he manically posts on here - dunno if he realizes many of the core people who post on ATC actually know each other and have a special bond that includes an annual get together on Tony weekend so yes , it is a bit of a clique here on ATC which might explain the mean-spirited bullying Rob sometimes has to endure. Personally, I gave up on all this gossip ET Access Hollywood etc s#$t about a decade ago. looks like N_R would like to have the same name recognition of a Perez Hilton. |

| I feel like we're less anonymous than many message boards, largely due to the (mostly) annual Tony Party that Ann and crew put together every year. We may not all sign our real names to every post, but many of the most active posters have no problem putting a face to their comments when we gather together each June. | |

| I agree -- ATC feels a lot less anonymous to me than, say, the BroadwayWorld message board. (I think a lot of people over there protect their anonymity because it allows them to appear more in-the-know, and in the business, than they actually are.) In addition to the yearly party, many of us (myself included) write regional reviews for the site, to which we sign our names. And many board members use their actual name as a handle. It really doesn't feel all that anonymous to me around here most of the time. | |

| I may not broadcast my name in my handle here (which dates way back to when I was writing trivia quizzes for Fynsworth Alley), but I think most regulars know I'm Laura Frankos; I write science fiction, fantasy and theatre history; I live in LA with my husband, novelist Harry Turtledove and theatre nerd daughter, Rebecca. | Nice to meet you Laura. You do know, however, that in a few months your post will be lost in the past posts of ATC. And, unless I have missed the background data for all participants, for all intents and purposes you will be anonymous again. At least my handle, when searched, easily displays who I am. |

| I was originally SDTheatreBill when I was posting reviews of shows I saw to the (late, lamented) West Coast board. I didn't want the local companies to know who I was. One manager figured it out and then encouraged me to write for publication. After I became a TB Regional reviewer, I started posting under my real name, as there was no longer a reason to keep my identity hidden. By the way, I very occasionally get an offline comment about a review, but I have never felt harassed by having my identity known here. That may be because I only write about theatre; I'm not employed in it. Bill, in San Diego |
