Len Cariou's performance as Sweeney Todd was arguably the greatest single male performance in the history of musical theatre - for its stature, its romanticism, its sense of danger, its sympathy. Sweeney could be authentically wistful as he remembered Johanna, and he could frighten you in "Epiphany". He also obtained a laugh from the audience on "What happened then, well, that's the play - and he wouldn't want us to give it away!" in the opening number the night I saw it. Spellbinding. Unforgettable. With respect to many who followed, and many of whom I've seen, none equaled him. If there is another performance identified in musical theatre history before his which had his dimension, I'd love to hear about it and ponder it.
