Last week I attended the very first preview performance of 'Trevor the Musical' at Writer's Theatre in Glencoe, north of Chicago. Writer's does not do a lot of musicals, but when they do, they do them well. The first time I saw Jessie Mueller on a stage was as Amalia Balash in their delightful production of 'She Loves Me".
Now Writer's is showing what is essentially an out-of-town Broadway tryout of a musical based on an Academy Award winning short film (available on YouTube), simply called 'Trevor'.
It's good, and will likely get better. And Eli Tokash, who played young Trevor both the night I saw the show, and on the official opening night (another actor apparently portrays him at some of the performances) is terrific!
I've included a link to Chris Jones' 3 star (out of 4) review in the Chicago Tribune. At the end of the review is another link to an excellent background piece Jones did on the creation of the show. It's worth reading. |
