William Ivey Long said it's the red dress in "Hello, Dolly!" I think more people might recognize The Phantom costume and the mask. What other costumes do you think people look at and can identify the show right away?

I agree with Long -- the red dress in Dolly. Followed by the red dress in Annie The Phantom Mask is an icon, but that's not really a costume, and I think his outfit is generic opera formal

| Mary Martin's "Peter Pan" costume and Little Orphan Annie's red dress come to mind, but one of my personal favorites was Robert Mackintosh's white dress for Angela Lansbury after Mame Dennis's husband Beau dies falling off the Matterhorn. Vera, of course, wore black! | |

Perhaps Rafiki in The Lion King or Grizabella in Cats or Cassie in A Chorus Line. Each design is iconic.

This is fun Apart from some of those immediate thoughts that I shared (Annie's dress for sure).. Could the leather jackets and pink ladies jackets in Grease work? The hair in Hairspray? A Cats leotard? Tevye's costume? Maria's nun outfit? I keep picturing an ad campaign with the costume pieces on a white chair. If I could recognize the show with just those articles of clothing, does it tell me?
