I saw the very first preview (recalled, because I signed a lease on my first NYC apt that day on the upper west side). 9/10/79, if memory serves. I also both women in the first three months. I thought Klausner's first act was absolutely the best of the initial Evas. She nailed "Buenos Aires" with an F-you youthful sexiness (and she's a dancer, she just danced it effortlessly). Her vocals were the equal of anyone's, and she looked terrific. LuPone, the better actor, made the second act more compelling, going deeper. She had a take on the balcony scene that was possibly definitive. But as she noted, she wrestled with the vocal demands, and she was always negotiating between her head and her belt, and made concessions depending on the performance. I don't recall much about that first preview, other than thinking that LuPone wasn't like Julie Covington, whom I'd heard on the studio recording and felt was the role. The full mezzo range -- I get that it was wonderful, now -- but I wanted the pop sound. It wasn't the LuPone we've grown to appreciate. She was more tentative. When I saw her again in December on a cold Saturday night, she acted the role so well (comment above) I remember taking note.

I was in my 20s, I was not terribly savvy about musical theater demands on singing actors (again, I knew the concept album, and expected to hear it). The show was unique, for reasons we all know. But chilly, keeping us at a distance, and in the big spacious Broadway, a bit remote, no matter where you sat. The first Klausner performance I saw was from row D of the orchestra, stunningly good seats. I got 'em at 1:50 on a matinee day after taking friends from "Sweeney" because Lansbury was out. That day, I thought Klausner tackled the first act with a confidence LuPone lacked. Maybe that answers your question. And LuPone later made the role her own, needless to say.
