As You Like It as presented by Happy Few takes place in a contemporary world, providing a fun, fresh look at Shakespeare’s timeless text. Rosalind, the daughter of an exiled Duke, falls in love with Orlando, who is downtrodden by his elder brother. The two separately flee the watchful, media-saturated world of the court, seeking refuge in the Forest of Arden, a place of music and community. But when Rosalind, now dressed as a man to protect herself and her cousin Celia, bumps into Orlando, their courtship becomes a game that subverts traditional romance. The production uses video and live original music, both to explore what is changeless and what is contemporary in how we tell stories, and to provide a thoroughly entertaining evening for audiences of all kinds.

Dogg's Hamlet, Cahoot's Macbeth
Play, Off-Broadway
Tickets at Theater
Wild Project, 195 E. 3rd Street, between Ave. A & B
May 2, 3, 7, 8, 13, 21, 22 and 23 at 8:00 PM, May 4 and 11 at 3:00 PM.
In "Dogg's Hamlet," an acting company prepares for "Hamlet" performed in its original language: Dogg – a language comprised of English words, but with different meanings. When an English-speaking delivery man arrives with their set, both languages break down and new ways of communication must be devised. The play illustrates the double-meanings often found in repressed societies, where important messages are often delivered in codes. The play caps off with a delightfully hilarious 15-minute "Hamlet," offering Stoppard at his word-playing, gleeful best.
In "Cahoot's Macbeth," which is dedicated to the Czechoslovakian playwright Pavel Kohout, renegade actors stage a deliciously shortened performance of Macbeth under the nose of a secret police officer. The play is about a performance of "Macbeth" that Kohout and his friends once staged in a living room since the government had banned public performances. The action shifts between the bare stage and the police inquiry; the murder and intrigue of Shakespeare's play are juxtaposed with the Czech political harassment. It's a stark and moving metaphor for resistance in a time of censorship.

May 5, 6, 9, 10, 14, 15, 16 and 17 at 8:00 PM; May 18 and 25 at 3:00 PM
King Lear's fate is sealed in Shakespeare's play: to be tragically reunited with the one daughter he loves. But what would be the fate of his faithful Fool? That question lies at the heart of "The Fool's Lear." The story line follows Shakespeare's fairly closely, but from the Fool's point of view. It's as if we eavesdropped on Lear and his Fool, separate from the Heath Scene, in their private moments. From this vantage point we witness the betrayal of Lear's daughters Goneril and Regan and the fidelity of Cordelia, whose love was better unsaid. These daughters plus Kent, Poor Tom (Edgar in disguise), a passing knight and many other characters, both major and minor, are animated as puppets by The Fool, who whips them together from a sash here, a pole there, and other materials from all around the set. Critics have commended the play for its profound treatment of ageless issues, its compellingly fluent use of language, its clever sight gags and the astounding physicality of Grant Neale as The Fool.
