Dear Edwina
Musical, Off-Broadway

DR2 Theatre, 103 East 15th Street (At 20 Union Square East)
Running Time: 70 minutes, with no intermission
Thirteen year-old Edwina Spoonapple would do just about anything to be a part of the Kalamazoo Advice-a-palooza Festival. While her siblings both have proof “up on the fridge” of their accomplishments, poor Edwina has nothing. When a talent scout from the festival visits her hometown of Paw Paw, Michigan, she trots out her musical advice giving shows live from the family garage in hopes of finding her place in the spotlight. She is assisted by her older siblings (on piano and drums) and a host of quirky friends and neighbors, including Kelli, the cool, sophisticated ballerina; Annie, the girl-scout cookie-selling champion; Billy, one-third of the Vanderploonk triplets; Bobby, the befuddled new kid on the block; and Scott, who is helplessly and hopelessly in love with Edwina. Together they set out to tackle the world’s problems, in number after hysterical number about everything from birthday party etiquette to the proper way to set a table (“salad fork, fork, plate, knife, spoon”). Sweet, smart and tuneful, it appeals to audiences of all ages, as Edwina doles out advice, and finally learns to listen to some of it herself.

Unlikely ladies’ man and pharmaceutical sales rep Charlie Reader has found the secret to having lots of eligible women at his beck and call, as he explains to visiting married friend Joe McCall who's just arrived from the home office: just let it be known that you're single. Once word gets out, dozens of women appear out of nowhere - doing everything from cleaning his apartment to picking up groceries - all in the hope they might end up with his ring on their finger. After all, it wasn’t so long ago that if a lady wasn’t married by the time she turns 30, her chances of finding a man were rather slim! But Charlie's life is about to take a dramatic turn. His friend Joe has come to New York not onlyto tell him about his amazing scientific breakthrough (it seems he's discovered the cure for the common cold), but also because he's grown tired of married life back in Indianapolis. Pretty soon,Joe’s eye wanders toward the lovely Sylvia Crewes, one of Charlie's hopeful "ladies in waiting," a fact that makes Charlie begin to really appreciate her for the first time. But Charlie, Joe and Sylvia are all completely unprepared for the "take-no-prisoners" approach of one Julie Gillis, a young woman with her own designs on Charlie, and who is determined to march him down the aisle, even if she has to use the dreaded "L" word (love!) to do it. With Joe contemplating leaving his wife, Charlie trying to find happiness with the right girl and a discovery that might make Charlie and Joe rich beyond their wildest dreams, things will never be the same again.

In this new and gripping adaptation, set in the present day south, we will take a poignant look at the effects of wartime on young men. After seeing war and bloodshed, Franz Woyzeck returns home to his lover and child. Unable to reintegrate into society, perform sexually, or relate to those around, he is thrust into a world of confusion and chaos. Incorporating Andrews Sisters style music throughout, this production is both timely and entertaining.
