When one enters the theatre, there are two digital screens on either side of the stage which offer a dictionary definition of the word "modern." As this was the way the original 2002 Broadway production began, it brought back nice memories for me about first seeing this show on Broadway. And, if a regional theatre production is never going to match that Broadway original, this Bridgeport Theatre Company revival of Thoroughly Modern Millie nevertheless comes pretty close to capturing its look and spirit. Also, it emphasizes what is best about this show: the songs, the endearing characters, and a cavalcade of dance numbers. As mentioned, Laura Piacenza is excellent as Millie. She sings and dances brilliantly, and makes the audience really care about her character's plight. As Millie's would-be suitor Jimmy Smith, Eric Regan is also pretty grand and brings a wonderful voice to all of his songs. Also shining are Chelsea Dacey as Millie's best pal Miss Dorothy, and the handsome and strong-voiced Marc Improta, bringing just the right amount of authority to Millie's boss Trevor Graydon. Likewise, Lauren Linn has fun in the role of Mrs. Meers and, as her accomplices, Mark Andrew Garner and Jonathan David are a delight. Still, if anyone comes close to stealing the show, it's the dynamite Saige Bryan as Muzzy Van Hossmere, whose two solos nearly bring down the house. This production of Thoroughly Modern Millie looks sparkling, thanks to the work of costume designer Jessica Camarero and lighting designer Phill Hill. Choreography credit goes to both Emily Frangipane and Artistic Director Eli Newsom (who contributed the tap choreography); their combined work is pretty great. The book by Richard Morris and Dick Scanlan has always been on the silly side and the director and cast do their best putting over the show's parade of jokes, even if the original script of the 1967 film, on which this musical is based, is ultimately funnier. Still, the score, containing songs written for the film as well as new music by Jeanine Tesori and new lyrics by Dick Scanlan, is a real pleasure and remains so in this current production, with musical director Clay Zambo leading a terrific band. Combined with the marvelous performances by the cast, the Bridgeport Theatre Company's production of Thoroughly Modern Millie certainly delivers a good time and is fortunate to have found the perfect Millie in Laura Piacenza. My favorite song in this musical has always been Millie's big "Gimme Gimme" number and this actress sings it to the rafters. For that reason alone, this Thoroughly Modern Millie could certainly be recommended, but, happily, the rest of the show proves to be just about as enjoyable and filled with zest.
