Stomp

StompThe Warner Theater’s latest offering is the very popular dance/percussion show Stomp. Stomp is the brainchild of creators Luke Cresswell and Steve McNicholas. The pair first presented the piece in 1991 in the UK, and it eventually made its way to New York in 1994 where it garnered both an Obie Award and a Drama Desk Award.

Stomp combines rhythm and dance in a unique way. Its set looks like something out of a junkyard and the “instruments” the performers use are items that can easily be found in such a place. There is no orchestrated music provided. Instead, trash cans become drums, basketballs make music and even lighters lend their own sound.

The performers are incredibly energetic. Their stamina is to be envied. As they play their instruments they dance and mug for the audience. At times their own bodies are used as instruments. The performers work perfectly in sync as an ensemble. Some are stronger than others in the area of dance, but together they create a memorable impression.

The nice thing about this show is the cast develops a relationship with the audience. The performers get the audience involved and soon everyone is clapping and stamping their feet.

Stomp is a great family show and a good way to introduce children to a theater experience. However, one should be warned. This show is very loud for an extended period of time. Those with low tolerance for loud noises may want to skip this one. Nonetheless, Stomp is a makes for a fun night at the theater. Stomp runs at the Warner through January 18th.
