Bounce Falls Flat While Crowns Takes Away Four Statues at
the Helen Hayes Awards
The 2004 Helen Hayes Awards were announced last night at the John F.
Kennedy Center for the Performing Arts in Washington, DC. The annual
awards recognize excellence in DC theater.
The ceremony garnered four awards for Arena Stage's popular production
of Crowns. Not only did the show win for Outstanding Resident
Musical but Lynda Grávatt won for Outstanding Performing Actress, Resident
Musical and Regina Taylor was honored with the award for Outstanding
Director, Resident Musical. Additionally, William F. Hubbard won the
award for Outstanding Musical Direction, Resident Play or Musical.
The much talked about Stephen Sondheim-John Weidman musical,
Bounce failed to win any awards, leaving nominees Richard Kind,
Howard McGillin, and Michele Pawk empty handed. Instead, the Lead Actor,
Non-Resident Production went to Ruben Santiago-Hudson for his work in
Lackawanna Blues at Studio Theater. The Lead Actress, Non-Resident
Production was awarded to Bianca Marroquin of Chicago, which was
presented at National Theatre.
It was also an evening for ties. The Chicago tour tied with
Lackawanna Blues for Outstanding Non-Resident Production. Also,
Washington alum Ted van Griethuysen (The Life of Galileo) tied with
Bruce Nelson (The Dazzle) for Outstanding Lead Actor, Resident
Play.
An abundance of talent was highly recognized. Winners include Tom
McKenzie (Ragtime) for Outstanding Lead Actor, Resident Musical;
Jacquelyn Piro (110 in the Shade) for Outstanding Lead Actress,
Resident Musical; Nancy Robinette (The Rivals) for Outstanding
Lead Actress, Resident Play; Stephen Gregory Smith (110 in the
Shade) for Outstanding Supporting Actor, Resident Musical; Everett
Quinton (Shakespeare in Hollywood) for Outstanding Supporting
Actor, Resident Play; and Emily Donahoe (Shakespeare in Hollywood)
for Outstanding Supporting Actress, Resident Play.
Additionally, The Charles MacArthur Award for Outstanding New Play or
Musical was awarded to Ken Ludwig for his comedy Shakespeare in
Hollywood.
