Peter Pan

The holiday season is a time that brings out the child in all of us, so, Olney Theatre Center's production of Peter Pan is especially appropriate for this time of year. This charming production of the classic musical is a treat for young and old alike.

Based on J.M. Barrie's play about a boy who never wants to grow up, the musical has an engaging score that features such well-known tunes as "Neverland," "I'm Flying," and "I Won't Grow Up."

Director Eve Muson has a straightforward approach to this show. There is nothing avant-garde here. Instead, the piece feels traditional and that is what makes it work so well.

Daniel Townsend is a delightful Peter Pan. His chemistry with Patricia Hurley's Wendy is quite strong. Both actors deliver solid performances despite the fact that Wendy's "crush" on Peter seems more adult than childlike at times.

Mitchell Hébert is an ideal Captain Hook. He is menacing without being over-the-top. Additionally, special mention must be made of Boo Killebrew. Ms. Killebrew pulls double duty in this production, playing Tiger Lily and acting as choreographer. She carries out both duties equally well. Her choreography is creative and energetic. The same can be said for her charismatic portrayal of Tiger Lily. She dominates the stage so much, she even overshadows Peter when they are on stage together.

The sets by Tijana Bjelajac are skillfully designed and lend a sense of wonder to the production. Pei Lee's costumes capture the essence of each character even if they don't always feel very original.

Be advised that this show has two intermissions. This may be a bit much for very young children. Still, Peter Pan is great fun so take the opportunity to escape to Neverland while you still have the chance. Peter Pan has been extended through January 11th.
