Amelia Zirin-Brown
I suppose it was a bit much to hope for the kind of freshness and inventiveness found in Teatro ZinZanni's last effort, Hacienda Holiday, but leftover ZinZanni elements seem to have been tossed into the current effort, The Hot Spot, a sometimes tepid brew of shtick, song, and circus at the popular spiegeltent at Seattle Center.

The slimmest of slim storylines involving a fountain of youth where dreams comes true, the show has a major plus in new diva Amelia Zirin-Brown as a lusty and strong voiced gal dubbed Lady Rizo. Frank Ferrante gives his usual 110% as the bombastic Chef Caesar, this time wooing Dreya Webber's wizened old lady who goes through the fountain and recaptures her youthful sparkle. Webber does a particularly warm and touching version of the Peggy Lee standard "Is That All There Is?". Though Wayne Doba and spouse Andrew Doba Conway as timeless vaudevillians Dik and Mitzi always please a crowd, some new musical selections are in order. Handsome juggler Joel Salom is a strong presence throughout, and the Vertical Tango team of Sam Payne and Sandra Feusi is as accomplished as ever.

The Hot Spot is directed by another ZinZanni star performer, Kevin Kent, who makes sure the action and energy are non-stop. It's just that you can only recycle some material so often, and then you need to let it go.

Teatro ZinZanni still offers an entertainment and dining experience unlike any other in town (though my date commented they could revisit their vegetarian entrée options). The Hot Spot may well be best suited to out of towners and newcomers to the format. It's hardly a bad show. Just not a ground-breaker.

The Hot Spot runs through June 7, 2015, at Teatro ZinZanni, 222 Mercer, Seattle Center. For tickets or information contact the Teatro ZinZanni box office at 206-802-0015 or visit them online at www.ZinZanni.com.
