So many movies have recently been turned into musicals and the trend continues. Many of these projects make little or no sense on paper, but a few movies scream out to be musicalized, like the 1983 holiday classic A Christmas Story. The musical version, music and lyrics by Benj Pasek and Justin Paul, book by Joseph Robinette, began life with productions in Kansas City (2009) and Seattle (2010) followed by a national tour in 2011, a seasonal Broadway production in 2012, and a return to New York at Madison Square Garden along with other productions in several major cities in 2013. Now the rights have been released to community theaters where I believe it will become almost as popular as the original film.

The Players in Sarasota is presenting the area premiere in a lively production directed by Berry Ayers. As is common in community theater, there are some wonderful performances and a few that could be a little better. As Ralphie, Judah Woomert is a major find. His biography says that "Judah studies dance, singing and acting locally and has big plans of a career on stage." He is a ten-year-old dynamo. Alyssa Goudy and Jeffery Kin play Ralphie's parents. The role is not a perfect fit for Jeffery's talent, while Ms. Goudy is warm and maternal, the mother that all of us wish for. As the narrator, Jean Shepherd, Allen Kretschmer draws us back to an earlier era when life was easier. Kay Siebold is terrific as Miss Shields, Ralphie's teacher, who has a showstopper in "You'll Shoot Your Eye Out." I was fortunate to be seated beside Education Coordinator Laura Courter who shared some information on several of the children in the cast who participate in her programs. They are collectively a big asset to this production, contributing strong singing, fine dancing and highly professional behavior on stage.

Berry Ayers directs and choreographs a fast moving production. Set design by William Narrs is excellent, with major sets for Ralphie's house, the classroom, and the department story Santa set-up. The major sets move on and off fluidly to keep up the pace. Costumes by Kaylene McCaw have a fine period feel, and lighting by Mike Wood is highly effective. Because Mr. Ayers is also music director, the decision was made to use pre-recorded tracks instead of a live band. I am not certain that was a good choice because there were instances of off pitch singing from people who normally can be counted upon for solid vocals at the performance I attended. Believe me, it is much harder to sing karaoke than with live accompaniment.

Kudos to The Players for bringing this fine family entertainment to our community and for giving so many youngsters a chance to be on stage.
