Millennium Musings

Another century, another show! Whew! We made it through to the 21st century without any glitches, including that scary Y2K hype which we all feared. The only glitch we had here at Talkin' Broadway was that our posted times after midnight EST on our message board came up with an interesting year...19100. All fixed now, though. So much for Y2K.

I did exactly what I thought I would do on New Year's Eve. At the stroke of midnight I was sound asleep, however, 3 hours earlier, I watched the ball drop in Times Square. Being in a different time zone, but living and working New York hours takes its toll. Still, wasn't the PBS television coverage just sensational? Each hour they took you all around the world to watch the festivities as the New Year was rung in. My favorites were London, Paris, and Bethlehem.

But, let's get back to Broadway. Kids Night on Broadway is coming up at the end of the month, and the good news is that they've extended the time for you to get tickets. As of 10 A.M. today, you can call Telecharge or Ticketmaster and order 1 adult ticket at full price and receive a 2nd ticket for a kid absolutely free. Kids in this case must be between 6 and 18 years of age. You can also go to the box office.

There will be 2 Kids nights, January 25th and February 1st, however, on the first night there will be a Free Kids' Fan Fair at Roseland where the kiddies can have their faces painted, try on costumes, or even get a dance lesson. Time for the Fair is between 3 and 6 PM.

Shows participating are: Cats, Chicago, Rent, Jekyll & Hyde, Annie Get Your Gun, The Phantom of the Opera, Les Miserables, Swing, Stomp, Miss Saigon, Kiss Me Kate, The Bomb-itty of Errors, and Over The River and Through the Woods. Call Telecharge at (212) 239-6200 or Ticketmaster at (212) 307-4100.

I see Our Sinatra, A Musical Celebration is playing at the Blue Angel Theatre on 44th Street. I wonder if Nancy Sinatra has seen it. Shortly after she saw The Rat Pack is Back out in Las Vegas, David Cassidy, who produced the show, was served with a lawsuit involving copyright infringement. The hit show shuttered in December and may re-open if the issues are resolved, but I doubt it.

For those of you heading out Las Vegas way, a few new shows will be opening this month. David Cassidy, a terrific performer, will be starring in his new show at the Rio Hotel which debuts at the end of the month and talented Clint Holmes takes over the showroom at Harrahs. Plus, the much anticipated Notre Dame de Paris opens Jan. 22nd at the new Paris Hotel. With the success of Chicago and the recent Rent and Cats tours passing through town, and Mr. Broadway, Tommy Tune, starring in EFX at the M.G.M. Grand, Las Vegas is slowly becoming Broadway West. And next year Jerry Herman's new musical, Miss Spectacular, will open at the Mirage.

Speaking of Miss Spectacular you can pick up a copy of the January 2000 issue of Las Vegas Life magazine and read an article about Jerry and how the whole thing came about. It's not published online yet but when it is, we'll get you the link just in case the magazine is not at your local Borders. It's written by some guy named John Gillespie. ;) I hear he's going to do another Broadway article for them. And to think it all started right here on the Web.

See you Wednesday!
