Double Exclamation Points: Oh, Kay! at Musicals Tonight!
Photo Feature by Michael Portantiere

George and Ira Gershwin's utterly delightful 1926 musical Oh, Kay! is the current production of Mel Miller's essential Musicals Tonight! company. (Please note that this is the funny, tune-filled original version of the show, not the unfortunate Broadway revival Nice Work If You Can Get It.) The production is helmed by Casey Colgan, a director/choreographer new to the company. James Stenborg is the musical director.

With a book by Guy Bolton and P. G. Wodehouse, the show tells the wacky story of Kay (Elizabeth Broadhurst), sister of an elegant British Lord-cum-bootlegger (Danny Vaccaro) who, with his henchmen Larry (Nic Thompson) and Shorty (Nick Locilento), has stashed 500 cases of illegal liquor in an uninhabited Long Island home. Complications begin when the homeowner (Nicolas Dromard) shows up with his new bride (Shelby Ringdahl) and her father (Joel Briel). A surprise wedding party is attended by a clutch of revelers (Maria Briggs, Desiree Davar, Nick Jones, Anthony LaGuardia, Elliot Marach, Chris McNiff, Katie Mebane, Sarah Claire Smith), including a pair of twins (Samantha Gershman, Meghan Glogower). The arrival of a revenue officer (Howard Kaye) only adds to the glorious havoc. The show's score embraces the classics "Someone To Watch Over Me," "Clap Yo' Hands," "Do, Do, Do," "Fidgety Feet," and other evergreen songs by the Gershwins.

Oh, Kay! runs October 13-25, 2015, at the Lion Theatre in the Theatre Row complex (410 West 42nd Street). All tickets are $26.25 and can be purchased at the box office or through Telecharge (212-239-6200).
