His father was a career Navy man so while growing up the family traveled a great deal throughout the Far East. He first got the acting bug as a young teenager while living in San Diego where he appeared in some high school plays. From there he went to the San Diego Jr. Theater and also performed at the San Diego Civic Light Opera and the Old Globe Theater. In 1977 he moved to Los Angeles to work with the Twelfth Night Rep Company, a multicultural improvisational group. It was when he did Roots, the acclaimed television mini-series that his career took off. Other television credits include, Trapper John, M.D., The Fresh Prince of Bel Air, and one of the singing voices of the California Raison commercials.
Broadway audiences were first introduced to Stokes in the critically acclaimed musical, Mail, which earned him a Theater World Award for outstanding Broadway debut. He replaced Gregory Hines in Jelly's Last Jam and then worked with Chita Rivera in Kiss of the Spider Woman and let's not forget the musical,Oh Kay!
In his free time, in addition to being an accomplished musician, composer, conductor and producer, Stokes is currently working on his first solo album in his free time. He's also full time husband to actress Allyson Tucker who is also in the cast of Ragtime.
