Actually, I believe Bernadette Peters was to have starred in a post-B'way mounting pf 'SUGAR' at the Ahmanson, but 'MACK & MABEL' was about to go into rehearsals at the Dorothy Chandler Pavilion and, with Marcia Rodd and Kelly Garrett both out, they finally brought in Ms. Peters, who then got replaced in 'SUGAR' by Leland Palmer. I say "finally" regarding 'MACK & MABEL' because I was working at After Dark Magazine at the time, and I remember hearing "They want a Bernadette Peters type for Mabel, but NOT Bernadette Peters." ... Wonder why that was? I saw that original 'MACK & MABEL' on B'way three times, and she was terrific in the part, for my money. ... Maybe I'm thinking of 'SEESAW' with that rumor. ... Hmmm.
