Agreed, and performers are wise to have their own team. But producers are in charge of marketing and selling their shows, as well as cultivating audiences for future shows, and part of that process continues to be by building actors into names. It's not an easy thing to do - despite strong efforts, no one has been able to build Philipa Soo into a star just yet - but it's worth the attempt.
Or, if we want to look at a different angle, we might talk about branding. "Groundhog Day" was built entirely around Andy Karl, he was the only face in the poster art and on-line commercials. It's great that they had a woman of color as a romantic lead, but they didn't put her out there as a visible aspect of the show. It would have been nice if they had.
These are small c criticisms of a show that made a strong effort in their casting, but there's room for us to make small i improvements. |
