Bernadette Peters might have been terrific as Sugar Kane...any actress in the role is, of course, going to be overshadowed by Marilyn Monroe and the writing for the musical doesn't help the actress at all. But Peters might have been able to give a kind of star performance that would use her own unique gifts to override the audience's memories of Monroe and make it her own.

I've never heard much about Elaine Joyce in the role, but I do recall hearing about a production somewhere (and this was years ago, so I don't remember details anymore) that cast an African-American actress as Sugar Kane. The person who told me about this said that it worked really well for two reasons...the actress herself was freed from any expectation of doing a Monroe impersonation and could then create her own character and also the audience was immediately able to put aside their expectations of the character and be more receptive to a different interpretation.
