| I loved ''Moulin Rouge!'' And I wasn't alone. Baz Luhrmann's wildly dazzling and dynamic movie musical got 8 Oscar nominations (winning 2 of them) and 6 Golden Globe nominations (winning 3 of them, including Best Comedy/Musical). It was named Best Picture by the Producers Guild of America and the NBR. Nicole Kidman, Evan McGregor & Co. earned a SAG nomination for Best Ensemble. If you hated ''Moulin Rouge!,'' so be it. No one is forcing you to buy a ticket to the stage adaptation. And if all this production were doing was re-creating ''Moulin Rouge!'' scene by scene, shot by shot, song by song, and throwing it onstage, I could see the outrage. But the press release makes it clear that they're ''reimagining Baz Luhrmann's remarkable film for the stage.'' Let's see what they come up with. Tony-nominated director Alex Timbers and Tony-winning playwright John Logan head a team of Tony-winning and Tony-nominated pros that includes Derek McLane, Catherine Zuber and Justin Townsend. Do you really think all these acclaimed creative artists will expend their time and talent on creating a carbon copy of the movie? Maybe ''Moulin Rouge!'' isn't playing ''Your Song,'' but they've earned the right to be judged on their work, and not pre-judged. |
