It is much weaker to me in terms of lyrics and analogy, not to mention as a musical number. I think Ah, But Underneath has the most depth lyrically, but Lucy & Jessie is the best number -- so I prefer L & J because it's still very telling and smart but also gives us a great number.
But I find Uptown/Downtown to be very lacking in all departments as compared to the other two.
However I do think, as genius as I think Follies is, that of the 4 characters' Follies songs, the Phyllis section is the least successful/illuminating/creative dramatically. |
