| never had a problem with Lucy and Jessie. Uptown is fine though, as a first attempt, it really does not reflect the Phyllis the audience has come to know. The Phyllis the audience knows as a young woman, did not hang out in the Village with friends drinking Schlitz beer. The second version, which is Lucy/Jessie fits the character the audience knows. The Phyllis of Lucy/Jessie reflects the naive young woman she was and the cynical, self aware, woman she has become. "Ah But Underneath" is clever but belongs in another show for a different character. (and, of course, that is exactly where it appeared.). |
