I saw the original Broadway 'TORCH SONG TRILOGY,' and fondly remember Estelle Getty being a very funny little old lady Jewish mother, which is what she always played (though Italian in 'GOLDEN GIRLS'), I guess.

But it worked!

Then came the disappointing movie with Anne Bancroft, as I remember, being NOT funny, but angry. And certainly not coming across as a little old lady in the Getty mold.

I suspect the casting of this part with Merecedes Ruehl will come closer to Bancroft's approach to the role than to Getty's. :(
