I agree with you assessment of Bancroft's unfortunate portrayal. Estelle Getty was very endearing and cuddly as Mrs. Beckoff and was hugely responsible for the play becoming the popular success it became. It is such a pity that she didn't do the movie. With her star in ascendance at the time, it would likely have played to a larger audience than it did. The real Mrs. Fierstein, whom I have only met twice is a combination of the two (for one thing she is far more human and charming than Bancroft was in the film) and I am hoping that Ruehl will come close to that interpretation. i certainly have great expectations for Urie (and I understand they are being met.)
