I remember reading (from Gibson himself, I think) that he and Arthur Penn (and maybe Fred Coe producer?) went out on a limb financially to insure that Bancroft could recreate her stage success in "Miracle Worker" on film. It involved them having to shoulder financial burdens which kept them from making much on the film. (I think one of the reasons was their disappointment with what Hollywood had done to their seesaw with MacLaine as their Jewish Gittel Mosca).
Hollywood wanted Liz Taylor for Annie Sullivan.
Had she done Annie and then Nellie Forbush....her career would've been even more amazing.

Agreed, though, that Bancroft was too glam for the simple-folk comedy effect needed to characterize Arnold's mother. Ruehl has some of Bancroft's actress-y flair but she'll probably tamp it down. Glad she's working.
