I really don’t think the problem is that Bancroft couldn’t play unglamorous people. Two examples that come to mind are Gittel and Estelle in Garbo Talks.
Agree that she and Fierstein didn’t work together, but really not sure that it was her fault. Working with him on stage seemed to consist of waiting for him to stop making speeches and screaming--and periodically being armed with a good comeback. It was his play, and at the time, it was an effective strategy, but far less so when it came to a movie.
I’d be interested to hear about how Reuhl is—I’m always glad to see her. |
