| I saw Sally Field and Bill Irwin, who both gave indelible performances. Had they opened the show, they both might have walked away with the Tonys that year. A brilliant element of Field's casting was the Gidget factor: her all American, "girl next door" aura made the extremes of rage that Stevie shows after learning of Martin's affair not only disturbing, but genuinely shocking. Watching Ruehl in Torch Song, I was struck by her natural intensity. She does not have the all American quality that Field has. Ruehl brings onstage with her a certain--for lack of a better word--severity that feels almost immediately Grecian. So, especially for those who saw both of these brilliant actresses in The Goat, how did their performances differ? |
