| There's no lack of grace and tenderness in MARY JANE. Herzog is an unhurried and supple writer. Her plays are psychologically aware and nuanced; they're casual but scrupulously observational. Here, amidst a nearly exalted, unsentimental naturalism, Herzog finds solemnity and grave purpose in depicting a single mother's responsibility for sustaining the life of her profoundly ill child. The absence of men in the play suggests that healing is too often women's work and that it's a communal habit. The play is carried along by a tide of quiet hope and heartbreak and it's beautifully acted all around. Coon especially is almost literally illuminating. |
