I saw this production three times. Ruehl was best in the first preview. Perhaps some tentativeness about the play's tricky content and tone kept her under control; by the time the play opened, she was going full blast throughout, and there wasn't much subtlety there.
Pullman was absolutely astonishing both times I saw him. I know Best Actor in a Play was a tough category that year -- Alan Bates, Billy Crudup, Liam Neeson, Alan Rickman and Jeffrey Wright -- but I still think it's a terrible shame that Pullman wasn't at least nominated. (I saw four of the five nominees; of those four performances -- all worthy -- I would have put Crudup's and Neeson's behind Pullman's that year.)
The third time, of course, I saw Field and Irwin, and I thought the polarity was reversed -- Field subtle and fascinating, Irwin one-note. I wish I could have seen Field and Pullman together.
What ever happened to Jeffrey Carlson? |
