I only saw the play with its original cast and am sorry to have missed Sally Field. I, too, loved Bill Pullman, and though I think Alan Bates deserved that year's Tony Award I was shocked that he was not a nominee.
Mercedes Ruehl was indeed a force. I did not find her to be one-note at all. There was a more comedic tone to the original production that I have ever picked up on in my readings of the play. I did not find it at all detrimental, although I know people who did. I did find Carlson's excessive work more than slightly problematic, but for some reason he was "in vogue" on the NY theatre scene of that era. |
