I have to be real about one thing we're not mentioning - Ben's sexuality is not "news" (at least not at the moment) partly because things are changing but also very much due to the fact that Ben is not that famous, and what he is known for are two things that no one would be surprised at all to have a gay actor doing - a series of movies about a show choir wherein underdogs unite and be themselves, and a broadway musical.
If he were in One Direction, or if he were Daniel Radcliffe, or if he were Chance the Rapper, or if he were even the star of an MTV show like Teen Wolf (when the actors of that came out it was news to some degree bigger than Platt's sexuality is)... it would be more discussed or wondered about or asked about or speculated about.
And couple that with (as it is semi implied in some of these examples) the fact that he is not your typical teen heartthrob - I think he is sexy but he is not the traditional sex symbol for the mainstream youths - if he were, it would be a bigger deal too, both as a decision to make for himself and his career, and for his fans to hear and process.

But outside of all that, I think it's also worth mentioning that though things are changing comparatively fast, especially in more liberal cities and suburbs, Platt has the unique and rare position of being the star of a huge hit broadway ABOUT teens lying about who they are and being in a closet of sorts, feeling left out and lost in their school and the world, unable to connect or feel seen... it also deals with bullying and being your true self, etc etc, and Pitch Perfect (which has been seen by millions of young people) is largely about the same kind of things just with a much lighter story and tone, but is at least about people on the outside coming together and not being afraid to be themselves... and the fans of these properties are largely *young people*, and very much queer and questioning and non-mainstream young people who see him and follow him, etc -- and being in this rare but particularly relevant position to people who still REALLY need to see young people who are famous and relevant to them and their lives be *out and vocal* (rather than coasting on how cool it is that his sexuality isn't an issue and he can never mention it but avoid lying too), this means it is even more important that someone like Platt be actually out about it. Especially while his fan base is still young enough for it to have some impact for them and the people in their lives.

And also because he isn't the traditional heartthrob and is famous for being in Pitch Perfect and a broadway musical, it would much easier for him to be out and vocal about it in public and the press without as much fear of it impacting his career or alienating his audience/fans.

But again, it's his life and his career.
